опис

SNMP is an protocol used to manage devices on IP networks. It is used mostly in network management systems to monitor devices for failures and warnings, but it's also used to set and get configuration parameters.
This course presents in detail the SMIv2 (Structure of Management Information) rules used to create MIBs (Management Information Base). It contains information about table relationships and best practices in designing MIBs. This part contains practical exercises to identify incorrect uses of the learned aspects.
The second part of the presentation deals with the three versions of SNMP, types of packets and their format, behaviour and security aspects. The practical examples in this part consist in sending and capturing the packets.
The last part contains guidelines to how an agent works: what to expect a MIB compiler to do, how does the agent translate the packets received, what does it do with the information in the packet, how does it retrieve or set the configuration information from the device.

Цілі

The trainees will learn the rules on how MIBs are created. After this course they should be able to understand and create MIB modules.

They will learn how SNMP agents and managers interact with each other, as well as with MIBs. After the course they will be able to understand the principles of the protocol, test on their own how it works, debug possible issues and configure networks to use it.

Цільова аудиторія

  • Developers and testers that need SNMP (the focus is on the agent, but it can be useful for those that use SNMP managers as well);
  • Network administrators.

передумови

Basic notions of routing.

Дорожня карта

  • Introduction : Quick overview of the components that make SNMP work.
  • ASN.1 overview : ASN.1 is a standard notation used by SNMP to describe rules and structures for representing data.
  • SMIv2 : Detailed descriptions about OID, data-types, textual-convention, macros, statements, and rules, everything accompanied by examples from real MIBs.
  • MIB2: Quick overview of the purpose and content of MIB II. Best practices for MIB design.
  • SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c: Description of packets and particularities of each version.
  • SNMPv3: What is new in this version and how security is achieved.
